Mos Def: Hip Hop's Renaissance Man - by Davey D

If there was ever a Renaissance man within Hip Hop it would no doubt be Mos Def. Here’s a man who does it all. He’s an incredible rapper, one of the best to come along in the past 10-15 years. He’s a talented singer who’s left his mark with songs ‘Umi Says’ off the ‘Black on Both Sides’ album which pays homage to his mother and ‘Kalifornia’ off the Torque soundtrack.

Mos Def is an Emmy nominated, award winning talented actor who has done a stellar job in flicks like ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘The Woodsman’ and ‘Something the Lord Made’. He set to star opposite Don Cheadle and Wesly Snipes in the movie Toussaint which is a film about the Haitian revolution.

You name it Mos Def does it…We wont even talk about his activism and the numerous causes he’s shown support and been involved in. His most recent venture occurred this past Labor Day weekend, when he teamed up with NASA and the ISIS (Instituting Science in Schools) education project and astronaut Leland Melvin to promote the importance of science, engineering, technology and the importance of exploration.

200o people came out to Oakland's Chabot Space Center to see Mos Def & astronaught Leland Melvin in a 3 D Hologram
Mos and Leland Melvin using a new 3D hologram projection appeared at science festivals in both Oakland, California and Orlando, Florida where they stood side by side and delivered their inspiring messages. More than 2000 people showed up at Chabot Observatory in Oakland to peep Mos Def in 3D. Judging from the loud applause and brief conversations with many of the young attendees, he did not disappoint.
Such accomplishments have only added to Mos Def’s appeal and underscored why he can come to a place like the Bay Area stay an an entire week, do sold out shows in both big and small venues. He did this the other night at Oakland’s New Parrish when he and his partner Talib Kweli resurrected their landmark group Black Star and rocked two shows along with comedian Dave Chappelle.
Two nights later Mos Def showed up as a solo act at San Francisco’s Independent nightclub on 628 Divisadero. And just like the New Parrish this venue sold out with less than a day’s notice.

Mos Def kicked off his set at SF Independent w/ the song 'Kalifornia'
Always a man for the people Mos Def who’s government name Dante Terrell Smith took the crowd to new heights when he brought out surprise guest Talib Kweli. Dave Chappelle was backstage chilling and watching the show. The fact that a man of his stature was there to enjoy the performance and was under no pressure to come on stage and ‘cheese’ for the audience, went to show you just how dope and respected is the man we call Mos Def.
What I like most about Mos is his willingness to give a full 100% in anything he does. A lot of artist should take a page from his book. When you come to town, park yourself there for minute and make yourself accessible to the fans. Do more than one show. Record a few tracks with the local artists and like Mos, give a different performance with each show. Give the audience what they’ve come to know and like you for, but at the same time you push the musical boundaries and give them something new.

Happy Rosh Hashanah : President Obama's Wish, Stephen Hawking's Error

President Obama is joined by this blogger in wishing you a Happy Rosh Hashanah. Here's Obama's video from yesterday:

Prof. Stephen Hawking

Come to think of it, since Stephen Hawking elected to introduce his book The Grand Design and declare that God did not create the Universe, it's fair to say that for him, Rosh Hashanah's not good, eh?

You'd think Hawking would show some respect for Jews by not releasing his book just a day before Rosh Hashanah, right? Talk about flunking his performance review. Geesh.

This blogger still can't understand why Stephen Hawking would write a book trying to debunk the existence of God, but not The Devil. Makes you wonder if his book itself's the Work of The Devil.

From this vantage point, Stephen Hawking looks just like the religious zealots he and his fans rightly criticize. Two sides of the same coin.

I prefer the edge. It rolls, if you know what I mean.

Happy Rosh Hashanah

Stephen Hawking, This Blogger Chooses To Have Faith In God

Stephen Hawking, the famed British theoretical physicist and cosmologist from the University of Cambridge, is considered to be a very bright person. If that's the case, why would Hawking make the terrible error of seeking to explain away the existence of God? Hawking apparently forgot that believing in God is an act of faith. In fact, not believing in God is also an act of faith.

Prof. Stephen Hawking

In his new book The Grand Design, Hawking is said to have established an idea called "m-theory," which basically explains that the universe sprang from nothing. That's a very neat place to start if one wants to say God doesn't exist. This blogger doesn't believe it.

There's no reason to write a long tome of an explanation for something I already figured out at 15 years old and while arguing Evolution versus Creation with my good, long time friend Craig Pryor while we were at Bret Harte Junior High in Oakland. That is, what you believe is what you chose to believe, and over time, you shape your intellect to fit your belief system.

Stephen Hawking apparently forgot that, because The Grand Design does not in detail lay out what his psychological reasons are for what he choses to believe and how those reasons evolved over his life.

Indeed, one paragraph does give an indication of something I suspected when this news of Hawking's claim was first brought to my attention: that Stephen Hawking has a God Complex. Hawking writes:

Thus our presence selects out from this vast array only those universes that are compatible with our existence. Although we are puny and insignificant on the scale of the cosmos, this makes us in a sense the lords of creation.

See? In other words, it's vitally important to Hawking that we have some kind of look of a God. Being God is not a role I prize one bit.   To have faith that I'm the center of all things is narcissistic.   I believe in God.

I chose to believe in God and that rather than nothing, it was God who created the universe. What's nothing for Hawking is God for me.

There's nothing to argue about.

Which leads to my next point.

It's really stupid for people to argue about the existence of God. It's all about faith and choice. The proponents of Hawking's m-theory are no different than the religious zealots they claim to fear. The old saw holds: be careful who you chose as your enemy, for you may look just like them.

I Believe In Santa Claus

In closing, long ago I elected to continue to believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and Unicorns. I believe in God and in the existence of The Devil. In fact, that Hawking forgets or perhaps elects to avoid any mention of The Devil indicates that The Grand Design just may be the work of The Devil.

I hope this blog posts causes Hawking believers to get angry and pissed, pound their fists, cry and whine, yell and scream, and just plain bust a gut, because in so doing, they will look just like the religious crazies they make fun of. And they will have made my point in the process. You can't win.

I chose to have faith in God. God Bless you, Stephen Hawking.

Oakland Mayor's Race: Perata Out Of League of Women Voters Forum

An update to an earlier post. Former State Senator Don Perata's Campaign Representative Rhys Williams confirms that the mayoral candidate will not attend the September 23rd League of Women Voters Forum.

The forum, that the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and other business groups approached the League Of Women Voters to do, has what can be described as a bizantine set of criteria designed to exclude certain candidates.

Don Perata will not attend LWV Forum
It's a format the Oakland League of Women Voters did not want to do, but for some reason elected to go ahead with, even though the "League" warned the business group representatives that it would be perceived negatively.

Don Perata has rightly taken the position that he would not attend any forum that excludes mayoral candidates.

There's another forum planned for the same evening that is open to all candidates. The League should jettison it's plans for a September 23rd Forum.

Stay tuned.

Mayor Daley Will Not Run: Chicago Without Daley? Unthinkable

Mayor Daley
Wow. Mayor Richard J. Daley Jr., is done? Chicago without Daley is unthinkable. For 35 of my 48 years on Earth, Chicago has been ran by a Daley. After Richard M. Daley steps down, no longer.

When this blogger was born on August 4th 1962, Chicago's Mayor was Richard J. Daley. He had already served as Mayor since 1955. In Mayor Daley Senior's Chicago, the subway expansion effectively connected the Northside and the Southside, a new McCormick Place Convention Center rose to replace the one that burned down, and a city that once called itself The Second City, slowly started to think of itself as first.

When Daley Sr. passed of a heart attack in 1974, it seemed as if Chicago itself stopped working. There was the disaster that was Janye Byrne's time as Mayor. And before that, there was Michael Bilandic, who's inability to deal with a massive snow storm cost him the 1978 election.

The one bright spot between the Daleys, Mayor Harold Washington, Chicago's first black Mayor, passed of a heart attack in 1987. Then Daley Jr. ran for election in 1989, and served for 20 years.

Over that span of time, Mayor Daley oversaw the transformation of my hometown from a manufacturing city to a service city, with the North Loop developed into a major site of small boutique firms and hip restaurants.

Chicago completed its long standing, ambitious plan to redevelop the lakefront. And Chicago became a city to be in, rather than a city to pass through.

Yes, it has it's crime problems. But overall, the Chicago of today is better than the Chicago of 20 years ago. Much of that credit has to go to "Richy Jr."

ESPN's Adam Schefter Says Tom Brady Contract Rumor Is Wrong

Adam Schefter
ESPN's Adam Schefter, who correctly tweeted that ESPN's Tim Cowlishaw was wrong about the timing of the signing of Darelle Rivas, scores again today.

On Twitter, Schefter reported that The Boston Herald's claim that Tom Brady was very close to signing to a three-year contract extension with the New England Patriots reportedly for $58 million, was wrong.

Adam Schefter tweeted:

Aware of Brady-contract talk. But two knowledgeable people say reports of deal being in place are "inaccurate" and "wrong". We'll see.    about 7 hours ago via web     Retweeted by 30 people

In an update at SBNation.com, Adam was reported to have said that a Tom Brady contract would be done in the next few weeks.

Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S for T-Mobile An iPhone Killer

This blogger was eligible for a T-Mobile upgrade and purchased the new Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S. Now, as a former iPhone owner, the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S looks and feels so much like an iPhone, there's no longer a desire to have one.

I really hate AT&T for how they unethically handled my billing situation when I had an iPhone (charging a constant monthly rate of $1,033.36, admitting it was wrong, then trying to reverse the admission). So, owning the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S and blogging happily about it and T-Mobile is sweet revenge.

What I like about the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S that I didn't like about my iPhone at the time was how the iPhone would accidentally come on with just the right brush of the front cover. Not so the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S.

I also like its super-bright display and video. I'm having issues uploading large files to YouTube, but that will be resolved soon.

I highly recommend the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy-S.

Oakland Mayor's Race: League of Women Voters Unethical Forum

The latest news in the Oakland Mayor's Race has the Oakland League of Women Voters still sticking to it's decision to exclude Oakland Mayoral Candidates from its September 23rd forum and for a booya-boogie list of reasons explained before in this space. This, after the Sierra Club opened its previously restricted forum to all candidates.

The lack of Oakland League of Women Voters cooperation to open its September 23rd Forum leads this blogger to ask if the LVW is being paid off by certain elements of the Oakland Business Community, specifically, the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, not to have an open forum?

Given my conversations with a number of people, payoff can come in different forms, like forum sponsorship.

Since I was told that the League Of Women Voters was approached by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce to have a restrictive forum, it's fair to assert that for all practical purposes a payoff was in play. Otherwise, the LVW would have said "no" to the Oakland Chamber's desires, and had an open forum. The Oakland LWV knows the risks at hand in having a closed, or "fixed" forum, yet they're going to do it anyway!

Fixed? Yes. Anytime you have a set of rules designed to exclude candidates, that's the same as "fixing" the forum. I said the "grassroots" effort to get more donations wasn't going to work, and here's my proof in this email from Oakland Mayor's Race candidate Don Macleay:

The LOWV should open their event to all candidates

Dear League of Women Voters, Oakland Branch,

I am writing with concern about the event you have planned for Sept 23rd.
My concern is about the “viability” standards I have received as a requirement to participate as a candidate in this event.

It is my firmly held belief that all ballot qualified candidates should be allowed to participate.

If you do not believe that so many people should be on the ballot, then just say so and advocate a change in the city charter.

We did not respond to your “qualification test” because we do not feel that there should be any other criteria than that of the City of Oakland.

It was my understanding that the Oakland branch of the League of Women Voters had the missions of INCLUDING and INFORMING the public away from our money dominated, media advertizing politics. The “viability” standards seem to be based only on media, money, and existing political connections. Do you now want to make sure that some people get exposure and others do not? It does not really matter what your intention is, that will be the effect. Now one place where all candidates were to be given a chance to make their case in front of the public and see their message distributed by the broadcast media has become one more place where the citizen candidate has been excluded.

The current press coverage is already strongly biased towards a pay-to-play model of politics which creates a self fulfilling prophecy of who is viable. The public is poorly served by the press which has done nothing to inform the public of their choices in this election. Why has the Oakland branch of the League of Women Voters become part of that process that does not fully inform the public?

Other events have taken place and other people have found ways to deal with the large number of candidates. In our modern media age, I think you could find a way to deal with this as others have.

What in effect will happen is that you will end up holding an event that tells the public:
There are people you are allowed to vote for and all the others are not viable.

Is that really the mission the League of Women Voters has now?

So I ask you to reconsider.

Don Macleay

Green Party Candidate for Mayor of Oakland, 2010
510 866-7488
candidate@macleay4oakland.org

P.S. We have received “consolation prize” invitations to at least one other Oakland branch of the League of Women Voters sponsored events.
This does not address the issue I raise here and I wonder who is served by these second string events.

Former State Senator Don Perata has said he would not attend a forum that excludes the other candidates. Thus, he should not attend the Oakland League Of Women Voters Forum.

Reggie Bush Scandal Poll - What's Tony Bruno's Take At Comcast Sports?

The Reggie Bush Scandal Poll is up and active. Right now, most voters, not a lot but the numbers are climbing, think former USC and now New Orleans Saints Running Back Reggie Bush should give back The Heisman Trophy.

This blogger think he should give it back and then sue USC. Another person thinks he should sell it on eBay!)

But what does Tony Bruno, seen here at the Playboy Mansion, think?

Tony Bruno's bringing his famous hard-edged, buzz-saw take to Comcast Sports Bay Area starting September 12th on The Sunday Night Rap with Gary Radnich, billed as "the most popular and most recognized sports television and radio personality in Northern California." (Oh, oh. Someone call Jerry Rice about that one!)

Tony Bruno has been jousting with Gary Radnich since 1995. Now, this Sunday, they're going to be on The Sunday Night Rap talking about The Reggie Bush Scandal and these poll results.

What say you about the Reggie Bush Scandal?

Take my poll:

Reggie Bush Scandal Poll - What Should Bush Do?

As predicted in this space what's called The Reggie Bush Scandal is now number one on Google Trends (boy, this blogger's good).

If you're not familiar with what went down (a little term to annoy PB), briefly, Reggie Bush was accused of taking gifts and receiving benefits in conjunction with his role as a running back at USC. He won The Heisman Trophy in 2005.

Now, after its own investigation, separate from the NCAA look, The Heisman Trust has, for the first time in history, asked for its trophy to be returned.

Now, everyone from The LA Times micro-blog on Bush (just to be in on Google Trends, nothing more) to Babble's Famecrawler has something to say about this.

Everyone except you, that is.

If you were Reggie Bush, what would you do in response to the news that The Heisman Trust had asked for your hard-earned Heisman Trophy back? Consider, the Heisman's own investigation said Bush received gifts and benefits. But none of them impacted his on-the-field performance that won him the 2005 Heisman.

This blogger says Bush should appeal the decision. Too many college football players are used for revenue-generation, then forgotten. Bush should take a stand. But that's me.

What say you?

Reggie Bush Loses Heisman : NFL Labor Twitter Tweets Are Juicy

While Reggie Bush has lost his 2005 Heisman Trophy. This blogger doesn't know how that works; I can't imagine someone showing up at his door and asking for him to take it out of his trophy case.

But however it's done, Reggie Bush clearly can't be happy at all with the news. Moreover, given his recent tweets on Twitter @reggie_bush, the experience may make him more of a fighter against "the establishment" and "the man" than he already is.

Witness Reggie Bush recent series of tweets on the NFL Labor issue - most recent, first:

RT @NickM84: @reggie_bush what working person wuld think an 18% pay cut wuld b reasonable? I wuld not except that either! Exactly!
about 17 hours ago via Echofon

RT @RandomTKA: ok so what is the sticking point with the negotiations? (the owners want the Players to take an 18% pay cut)
about 18 hours ago via Echofon

So that next year if in fact there is a lockout, which is looking like that's what it's gonna be, you guys know all the facts!
about 18 hours ago via Echofon

I think people are taking this as a need for sorrow or pity? Not at all! Just educating you guys! It's always good to be knowledgable!
about 18 hours ago via Echofon

And the bigger picture is not just about the current players. But also the retired players who are maybe now broke. What happens to them?
about 18 hours ago via Echofon

Every NFL Athlete does not make millions. That's a small percentage of the NFL. The vast majority makes nowhere near that.
about 19 hours ago via Echofon

Healthcare is an issue that all people can relate to. And as Football Players it is the back bone of our business and life.
about 19 hours ago via Echofon

And it's not a strike, it's a lockout on the NFL Owners behalf! The players want nothing more than to play, but we have to be protected!
about 19 hours ago via Echofon

Here is one of the major issues: Did you know that as of March 2011 not one single NFL Player will have Healthcare Insurance
about 19 hours ago via Echofon

@fraschettik I'm so glad you said that. Because it's not about rich fighting the rich! It's about much more than that!
about 19 hours ago via Echofon in reply to fraschettik

RT @fraschettik: Reggie it's hard for the average American making 45 to 50k a yr watch millionares and billionares fight over money.
about 19 hours ago via Echofon

Now, put together those tweets with Reggie's time as a USC Trojan, the subsequent investigation and stripping of the Heisman, and the wager here is Bush will become a fighter for player rights against owners and the establishment.

I also can't see Bush taking the USC issue without a fight.

John Lennon's killer denied parole By Nikky Raney

Mark David Chapman, 55,  has been denied parole for the sixth time; he was previously denied parole in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

Chapman
Chapman shot and killed John Lennon outside Lennon's apartment in New York City on December 8, 1980. Chapman's sentence is 20 years to life in prison - he has currently served 29 years of his sentence at Attica Correctional Facility.

Chapman has met the criteria to receive the privilege of spending 44 hours at a time with family members in a special setting. In his case for the past 20 years he has been allowed visits with his wife, Gloria.

Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, has previously submitted letters requesting Chapman's parole be denied - he is eligible for parole in August 2012.

College football Rankings, Boise State, Reggie Bush and Heisman

Big News: College Football Rankings, Boise State, Reggie Bush and Heisman.

First, for the College Football rankings, due Tuesday, case a vote for Boise State as Number One. The Boise State Broncos took the 10th-ranked Virginia Tech's best shots in a heavyweight prize fight and came out on top 33-30. Plus, they had to travel 2,836 miles to do it!

What impressed me about Boise State was their effective off-tackle running attack. They picked up yardage almost consistently, and much of that was a mix of design, coaching, and execution.

Boise State over Alabama for Number One? Yep. Boise State already came in 3rd in the preseason voting. Meanwhile, the Alabama score was what? Alabama Crimson Tide 48, San Jose State Spartans 3.

And for the Crimson Tide to score just 48 points, and the San Jose State Spartans to score 3 was saying something for San Jose State.

Whatever the case, San Jose State can say "You didn't drop 50 on us!"

Reggie Bush Loses Heisman

Eventually, this is going to be the talk of the day, but according to Yahoo Sports, USC and New Orleans Saints Running Back Reggie Bush now has to return his Heisman Trophy. It will be considered vacant for 2005.

This blogger thinks that regardless of the current rules, Reggie Bush earned his Heisman on the field. Moreover, if Reggie Bush loses the Heisman, which has happened, Bush should sue USC for the money they collected in season ticket sales and merchandise sales while he was at USC.

Colleges are still using athletes, especially in the revenue-producer that is football, as slaves. No, they're not forced to play, but they are coaxed to do so with promises of riches down the road - or while they're in college. Everyone from coaches to alums offer them the World, and then snare the unsuspecting student. And, yes, black student football players are targets for this way too often, as was Reggie Bush.

Very sad development. You may say Bush knew the rules, but so did his coaches, who should have worked to protect him. I could say that it seems weird that Former USC Coach Pete Carroll has got off scot-free while Mike Garrett and Reggie Bush get fired and stripped, respectively.

I don't get not paying college athletes. When I was in college as an undergrad at Texas-Arlington, I worked at the mail room on a work-study grant. In grad school at Cal Berkeley the work I got was as a consultant. Why can't college football players be paid in some way like that? I don't get it.

Stay tuned.

Koran burning announced By Nikky Raney

Evangelical Christians in Florida have threatened to burn the Koran, the holy book of Islam, on Sunday, September 11 - which will be the ninth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Doveworld.com proudly sends a message.
The Dove World Outreach center in Gainsville, Florida calls this "International Burn a Koran Day." The group writes on the web site, "We will burn the Koran in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil."

Also on the web site includes a page called: Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran.

General David Petraeus, US military commander in Afghanistan, says that the burning of Islam's holy book would not be a good idea in regards to consequences that it may have on the troops overseas.

"It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," Petraeus says as reported by the Telegraph.

The First Amendment protects the right for the group to come together and do so - but is this event worth the damage that it could further cause? Is acting out in such a hateful way the right way to "remember" those who died? America is already not perceived very well abroad, and the action of publicly announcing and holding a Koran burning event is not going to go very well.

David Weston announces resignation By Nikky Raney

David Westin, ABC News President for 13 years, has announced his resignation and will leave his staff by the end of 2010.

Macura/AP
Westin just recently turned 58 and says his reason behind the resignation is so that he may pursue other opportunities. He has come to the conclusion that after 13 years of being the longest-reining U.S. television network news division chief it is time for him to move on.

"This is the right time for me," Westin wrote in a staff memo given to the Associated Press.

Amid Rooney Allegations Of Sex With Jennifer Thompson, Wife Seeks Divorce

Jennifer Thompson
First, this Jennifer Thompson is not the Stanford and Olympics Swimming star and med student. Let's get that out of the way.

This Jennifer Thompson is a $1,700-a-night British escort who claims to have slept with English Soccer Star Wanye Rooney, and more than once, while his wife Coleen was pregnant.

And just when England was overcoming the disaster that was The 2010 World Cup.

In fact, if The Daily Mail is to be believed, and I don't see why not, Jennifer Thompson has the ugly habit of taking, sleeping, and then telling. That is taking money, sleeping with the payer who's also a player, and then telling it to her friends.

According to Ms. Big Mouth, er Jennifer Thompson via The Daily Mail, she's slept with Wanye Rooney, El Hadji Diouf, Amir Khan, and Callum Best. Reportedly, she was so popular with soccer players, or footballers. The Daily Mail claims a so-called friend said "Call Jen, she'll give you a good time". She always has cocaine with her. She takes two bags - one gram each - with her when she goes out and takes most of it herself."

Wanye Rooney Is Devastated

Wayne Rooney's said to be devastated over the news. And because it could lead to his being dropped from a Euro 2012 qualifying match Tuesday night.

Or maybe because his wife's reportedly seeking divorce. Wayne was said to have told his wife of the news of his infidelity via text message while she was in the hair salon!

AllVoices claims this is the second time Rooney's slept around on his wife with a prostitute. She's had enough.

You can't make this stuff up.

Mad Men: The Suitcase - Don Draper Is A Racist, Deal With It

Will Don Draper's door ever open for blacks?
Mad Men is unquestionably an excellent television program with acting and story that is edgy, provocative, and thought-provolking. But because the television show is an entertainment child of the 21st Century, some fans of Mad Men, tend to forget that it was set in the mid-1960s.

Thus, when this blogger asserts that Don Draper, the lead character well-played by John Hamm, is racist, some have a hard time dealing with that observation. Others might point to Mad Men creator Matt Weiner's claim that his work is one of "science fiction," except that Weiner admits the atmosphere of Draper's office is overtly sexist and racist.

Thus, Don Draper himself is racist.

Take Mad Men: The Suitcase. In fact, you should because it's great television. The overall storyline is really about two people, Don Draper and Peggy Olson, who's work lives are a cover for their damaged selves. Draper has only his work. Peggy wants to get more recognition from her work. But Draper's also a boxing fan, and here's where his watered-down racism reveals itself.

Draper issues the standard predominantly white fears of the man we call Muhammed Ali, who was then called Cassius Clay.  Draper complained that Ali always boasted.  Draper wanted Liston to win because, essentially without saying it, Liston was the "good Negro," the person that wasn't threatening to Draper's World view, which has blacks in a certain place.

Draper has not faced a black character who was his 1960s equal: someone who was smart enough to establish their own firm to help companies market to blacks.  There's nothing in Draper's makeup, and the Liston remarks confirm this, that indicates he could work with someone black who was his equal.

In reality, anyone who was a white male ad exec in the mid-1960s New York city could not get their by being a 21st Century non-racist. The fact is the Civil Rights Amendment was passed in 1964. It forbade discrimination in the workplace, in public schools, and in voting registration. Now, just because a law is passed does not mean businesses are automatically going to follow it immediately.

Unless Don Draper was out marching for civil rights, and hired black interns or had a black girlfriend, it's fantasy to think Draper wasn't racist. Indeed, it would be inaccurate to the period to present him as not having racist views, yet achieving that level of success.

Remember, Draper's firm has yet to hire an African American at any level above servant, and if they do, you can bet on this: that person's hire will be controversial and what that person has to do to remain at the firm - what they have to deal with on a daily basis - has to be a part of that story line if Mad Men is to be believable.

If such a hire happens it would have to be approved by Draper. If Draper does so, it would have to be only after he overcame a set of racial personal demons himself. It would not - or should not - happen in one episode. In short Don Draper would have to overcome his own racism.

Remember, it's the times. They were racist to an extreme by today's standards. The biggest problem is that many of fans of Mad Men weren't born at that time; this blogger was.

Which drives me to write this blog post.  The simple fact is that even with that racism, the 1960s were a time of pioneering achievements by blacks in the ad World.  As was pointed out in Racialicious:

It’s unlikely Mad Men will acknowledge executives for Pepsi-Cola—led by men including Edward F. Boyd—pioneered marketing to Black consumers in the 1940s and 1950s. Or the late Vince Cullers of Chicago launched the first Black advertising agency in 1956, while Luis Díaz Albertini founded Spanish Advertising and Marketing Services, the first Latino shop, in 1962. Hell, even Alex Trebek won’t recognize such trivia.

The other biggest problem is that television "critics" - either because of their own blindness to racism and institutional racism or because they want to pretend racism doesn't exist by not mentioning it - have written that Mad Men got the 1960s right. TV Critic Tom Shales committed this display of ignorance when he wrote "Details of the period, however, are nicely captured" when Mad Men was introduced in 2007.

He means details like the furniture; Shales left out the dirty issue of people and society in Mad Men.  The simple fact, is that save for Draper quizzing a black waiter on cigarettes, which says more about Don's desire to get information from any source than how he feels about African Americans, Mad Men has not addressed the issue of American racism toward blacks. That was the defining issue of the 1960s.

Toward A Better Mad Men

At first, I must admit, I didn't pay attention to Mad Men because I thought it was going to be a fake-period-piece that didn't hire non-white actors for anything more than five lines at best.   Now, I see it as a potentially useful show that can demonstrate not just the similarities but the differences between race in the 1960s and today.

The burden of proof that Don Draper's not racist is on those who would have to rewrite the history that was the 1960s. Those fans have to accept what President Lincoln said are "the hard facts that created America," and those that continue to shape it.

Caroline Wozniacki Muscles A Victory Over Maria Sharapova In US Open

20-year old Caroline Wozniacki beat Maria Sharapova in straight sets on Labor Day at the 2010 US Open.

The victory wasn't even funny to watch. It was brutal. It was the skinny beauty queen in Maria Sharapova versus the female bodybuilder Caroline Wozniacki, and brawn won big time.

Caroline Wozniacki had Sharapova literally chasing the ball all over the place. Then, just when it looked like Caroline from Denmark was six points from a win, Sharapova mustered her reserve and nearly avoided the straight set win that did happen, 6-3, 6-4.

Now, Caroline Wozniacki, the number one seed who's won 19 of 20 straight sets since Wimbledon, advances in the US Open.

U.S. Open Tennis: Venus Williams French Open Outfit Shows Legs

Venus Williams (AP)
The new buzz is all about U.S. Open Tennis and Venus Williams' French Open outfit. Since it lacks a skirt, all we see are legs and bikini panties. That's it.

Venus says the outfit's designed to show fireworks.  But the only fireworks were because of what the outfit shows - almost everything below the waist.

All this space can say is "WOW." But frankly, her sister Serena has better legs: more shape and muscle. Still both are sexy.

You have to admit, Venus knows how to stir a crowd online and offline.

 Caroline Wozniacki (Extreme Sports)
And that brings up another thought. This should confirm that guys watch women's tennis to check out the legs.

It's really that simple. Where else can guys see women showing great, sexy, muscular legs? You can't even get that in Playboy.

And on the topic of Women's Tennis Players with legs, Caroline Wozniacki has better legs than Venus Williams, at least I think so.

Caroline Wozniacki, who's legs are even more muscular than in the photo, is as of this writing six points from beating Maria Sharapova. But nerves are getting to her. She's double-faulting.

Still Sharapova's making errors to.  Wozniacki is two points away from victory.

But those legs!

Oakland Mayor's Race: Don MaCleay, Don Perata, Tax Increment Financing

Blogging random thoughts on Labor Day 2010 in Oakland.

First, say Chip Johnson, my friend, can you name all of the candidates running for Mayor of Oakland without a list to assist you? A bottle of wine says you can't do it on video. Talking to Don Perata is great, and it was a great column, but we need more coverage from you - try doing all of them! Besides, Don skipped the Forum. He had a reason, but Perata's not Mayor; acting like he is will not win the prize.

...Still, I'm starting to see Perata lawn signs...

Second, this blogger has video from the Oakland Mayor's Race Forum on Jobs from last Thursday, but thankfully so do a number of Oakland blogs. That means I can wait and take my time. Yeah!

In fact, I have a backlog of videos that are of a higher priority than the Forum, and I will explain why below. But interviews with Oakland District Two Councilmember Pat Kernighan and her challenger Jennifer Pae, and an upcoming interview with Joe Tuman have to get out there.

Third, now, about the Forum. Where were Terrance Candell and Arnie Fields? Got to attend these things.

Don McCleay
As I stated in my Twitter tweets during the forum - and there's a good chance you didn't see them, which is cool, but it's not like I have a million followers yet - I believed the best performances were from Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, Joe Tuman, and (drum roll please) Marcy Hodge. I really didn't think Hodge would do that well, and I base much of my choice on the way she handled my tax increment financing question.

Frustrated with the dog-and-pony-show level of questions at the Oakland Mayor's Forums, I tossed in this one: What is Tax Increment Financing and how will you use it to help business and create jobs in Oakland?

Or something like that.

The question did what I engineered it to do: surprise the candidates and make them think, and scare them. In the process, we learn how they handle a real curveball. Because that's what Mayor's will have to deal with: lots of curveballs.

Beyond that, I wanted to see if the people running for Mayor knew about what tools were available to them for job creation and business assistance. TIF is one of them. (And before you tell me it can't be used for the provision of services in Oakland, I will tell you you're wrong. There's a little known part of the California Heath and Safety Code that says, essentially, that it can. So there. Go and do your homework, and when you're stuck, call me.)

At any rate...

Marcy Hodge answered the question and correctly referred to TIF for what is is, a tool. For someone who didn't spend time in redevelopment (well, OK, she is on the Peralta Board), she gave a good answer of what it could and could not do.

I can't say that for my friend Don MaCleay, who's first concern was "Who asked the question." My thought was "Who cares! Just deal with it." I was openly disappointed in Don, and I think he knew he could have handled that better.

In fairness, Don was the one who got the question first. But that deer-in-the-headlights look he had was frankly totally funny. He paused for a second, and almost had his own Jan Brewer moment, except he saved himself by 8 seconds.

Because of Don's flub, the other candidates were under pressure to try and get it right and for the most part, they did. Councilmember Jean Quan actually got it better than the other candidates, and were it not for Hodge's surprisingly poised answer, would have won the round. Jean Quan was fair, she didn't bash TIF, just gave an evaluation of its pros and cons.

Larry Lionel Young Jr, started off well if stilted, but then lost me when he went "street" in the last part of his answer, ending in a "Vote for LL."   Still, "LL" is a very polished candidate and has presented himself extremely well.   The gap between he and say, Councilmember Jean Quan isn't much, frankly.

But the "much" is critical. I think if the Forums had more policy questions like that one, Jean would do better than she has. Councilmember Quan's a really bright and well-considered person. In retrospect, I don't think the Forums have done her justice, but one thing is she's getting better at just being happy rather than having the view of "what am I doing here with these people."

I hope she keeps it up.

What Is Tax Increment Financing?

Oh, forgot to mention. Tax Increment Financing goes like this. You have an area of the City that you and I agree is blighted. So the Oakland City Council agrees and to make a long process short, we have a redevelopment area. The property tax paid by land and building owners normally goes to the city, county, BART, AC Transit, and EBMUD; now it goes to the Oakland Redevelopment Agency.

The first year of collection, we take the total assessed value of the new area and that becomes the base year of AV. (AV is assessed value.) Each year from that point we take the total assessed value for that year and subtract it from the base year, and multiply that times the tax rate. That's our money for that year, but we let it build up year after year.

If we look out over a 40 year projected period, we have enough to use to float a bond to finance a redevelopment plan.

That's the basic explanation of TIF from a guy, me, who's been a consultant to the City of Oakland, Emeryville, and Elihu Harris, when he was Mayor of Oakland.

OK. It's Labor Day. Enjoy it.

Mad Men: The Suitcase - Don Draper's Racism In Ali vs. Liston

In my previous post on Mad Men, I blogged this:

Mad Men and Ali v. Liston 2: May 25, 1965

To put things in perspective, I was born August 4, 1962. What's great about being alive now is that there are shows like Mad Men that reach back to my very early years, but I'm contemporary such that I can express what I was seeing then, now using a blog. By then I was barely three years old, but I remember the buzz about this Cassius Clay guy and how some people in Chicago said he was Muhammad Ali.

A lot of people, black and white and whatever, wanted Ali to lose that fight; not true for my parents, who never communicated a negative thought about Ali. But it was all over: neighbors talking to my dad. On radio. On television (we had one.) Ali was this bad guy who talked too much.

Ali kicked Liston's ass. I was happy then, and happy to see Don Drapers face sag as he drove his cigarette into the ash tray.

Yes. Happy. Prior to his visit to the local bar with Peggy (which was a pretty bold step to bring a woman not your wife to a bar in 1965), Don Draper commented that Cassius Clay was a big mouth who talked to much. "Why does he have to say it; just do it."

Draper spouted all of the fears that America, circa 1965 had about Muhammad Ali. If you were black, you were supposed to keep quiet. Not say anything. In those days, in some areas of the United States, it was considered not legal to even have a white girl friend. In the South, just looking at a white girl would get you lynched. That was the era Mad Men is focused on.

I mention sex because sexual advance toward a woman is the common act of male sexuality. The simple fact is, even at a time of same sex marriage, being able to overcome the fears of rejection of a woman and learn the female language is considered the ultimate act of manhood.

The other ultimate act of manhood and adulthood for women is self-expression of prowess: that is to say I'm the best. For someone black to openly say that in 1965 was considered a threat to a white World.

Thus, many Americans regardless of color did not want Ali to win, let alone "be Ali." They wanted him to be Clay. To remain in the background. To be a boxer and not a political symbol. Donald Draper embodied all of that in Mad Men: The Suitcase.

I'm glad he lost his bet.

Mad Men: The Suitcase - Internet Buzzing, And About Ali vs. Liston

Mad Men: The Suitcase is a perfect example of why Mad Men rules The Emmys. Look, I'm not a Mad Men junky, but I know great television when I see it.

For this blogger Mad Men: The Suitcase was a study in the collapse of the professional masks of two very damaged people, and Don Draper's mainstream racist view of Muhammad Ali (which I explain in this link.)

Don Draper's got nothing but his work; Peggy wants to be seen as more than just an office tart. But at the end of the day, literally, both get scrubbed up and go back at it again. With Draper finding creative inspiration from a fight he took the wrong bet on.

Mad Men and Ali v. Liston 2: May 25, 1965

Buzz for Mad Men: The Suitcase

Of course, the accounts of Mad Men don't even focus on Ali v. Liston, but they're worth noting, none the less. The LA Times Meredith Blake blogged:

"Mad Men" can be a lot of things, but one thing it’s usually not is a tearjerker. The show always packs an emotional wallop — you'll laugh, you'll cringe, you'll want to throw paperweights at Don — but good, old-fashioned lumps in your throat are hard to come by. Sunday night, however, there wasn't a dry eye at my house. Granted, I watched the episode by myself, but still: If the image of Don, drunk, heartbroken and curled up in Peggy’s lap, won't get you a little misty-eyed, then your name must be Betty Draper.

Hmmm. Reading between the lines, I'd say Meredith Blake's trying to tell us she's single and ready to mingle, but I digress. Here's the Entertainment Weekly's Mad Men Central:

...And there kicked off one of the finest two-player performance pieces I can remember from TV history. (Hyperbolic? So what. I'm drunk on feelings of love and goodness. And from pressing repeat on ''Bleecker Street.'') It was like watching a play unfold, as Peggy and Don circled one another, spitting out long-held accusations — he's a drunk, she's a child — and sharing revelations from their similarly traumatic childhoods. Elisabeth Moss had so many brilliant moments.

I'm waiting for the Mad Men fan sites to kick in with their take. It's going to be interesting. But I'm still thinking about Ali vs. Liston.

Labor Day no picnic for jobless 99ers

This Labor Day is no picnic for the jobless 99er Nation. While much of the country is busy celebrating the unofficial end of summer, millions of jobless Americans can barely put food on the table because they have been without unemployment benefits since February/March this year.

One week from today, the US Senate will return from their summer break, but will only remain in session through October 8th, when they will again adjourn until long after election day. Currently there are 2 bills waiting in Congress for when they reconvene next week. Time is short. The Americans Want to Work Act (S3706) and HR6091 are both flawed, as they do not cover all UI ‘exhaustees’ in all states. For the many facing hunger and homelessness everyday, today is certainly no day of celebration.

The best Americans who have exhausted all tiers of UI benefits can hope for now, is to have the Americans Want to Work Act extended to include all states and passed immediately. No half measures will do and for those struggling desperately to stay afloat, this cannot happen soon enough. Once S3706 passes in the Senate, it should pass easily in the House, then on to Obama for his signature. Once it becomes law, it will depend on each state how fast the UI benefits will get to those who needed them months ago.

President Obama needs to get involved and in touch with the 99er community by holding town hall meetings and speaking to us directly. These meetings could be held online. The 99ers are angry and our votes will show it in November. No Democrat is safe at this point and many 99ers have already changed their affiliation to Independent, as a direct result of the lack of compassion and urgency thus far to help the 99 community, by the party in power. If Obama will not talk to the 99er Nation, we must talk to him.

To that end, we are encouraging all unemployed Americans, exhaustees or otherwise to participate in a campaign to contact the President, all your Senators (Democrat or Republican) and demand they vote for this bill immediately.

Contact information for all Senate members can be found at: http://joblessunite.yolasite.com/legislators-list.php Congressional Toll free Switchboard: 1-866-220-0044.

Every day WE NEED ALL AMERICANS concerned about this crisis to contact the White House Comments Line 202-456-1111 Comment line is only open 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday EST.

If we can get millions of Americans to call the White House Comments line, demanding this Tier 5 bill become law, we will not be ignored. So, spread the word, share this article where you know it will reach the unemployed masses. If we make this call in campaign vital to the success of their November campaigns, we cannot lose.

Machete Race War? The Expendables Has Whites Killing Latinos

Machete Race War? What about The Expendables? A small Internet brush fire, started by Alex Jones of the blog Prison Planet, has it that the movie Machete is anti-white.

The take on the movie, which this blogger hasn't seen yet, has led to protests online and offline. The San Jose Mercury News reports that a protest was held in Livermore, California over the idea that Machete is anti-white.

But a commenter here at Zennie62.com and on the previous post about Machete has a take worthy of mention:

Alex Jones is stoking the flames of white american frustration and anger. His articles of this movie have been featured on DrudgeReport.com the past few days. I've certainly have never heard or read of him before but by reading his recent articles he seems like a complete conspiratorial nutjob.

A recent movie I viewed called the "The Expendables" with Sylvester Stallone deals with him and a band of mercenaries (whites) flying into a small island banana republic controlled by a CIA rouge agent (white again) and end up totally massacring at least 250 latino soldiers. The sole latina in the film is even water boarded in full view graphically. Not one word from Univision/Telemundo etc. etc. of this. Why no outrage? It's not reality, it's fiction, it's film.

Can't we have a movie where mexicans are for once the heroes? Alex Jones says NO!

Interesting. But given my interview with Sylvester Stallone at Comic Con 2010, I'm certain he would bristle at the notion The Expendables is anti-Latino, let alone anti-Mercenary.

Still, the commenter has a good point. Even if there's no stated intent to present Latinos in a bad light, The Expendables does have to do with a fictional South American (read: Latino) country and a dictator (read: Latino), and people who defend the country who The Expendables, of which all are not white - Terry Crews is black and Jet Li is Asian - but do kill people who have a Latino reference, if you will.

Oh, boy. My guess is Lionsgate's not going to be happy about having their tentpole film tossed into this debate.

Machete Race War? Alex Jones Claims Machete Movie Is Racist

There are three problems with the claim that Alex Jones makes about Machete igniting a race war.

First, from occasionally watching as much as this blogger cares to of MSNBC's Lockup, race wars are something that only happen in prisons and not in civilization.

Second, a movie attacking Arizona's psychotic illegal immigration law, as Machete reportedly does, is bound to make someone in Arizona who's involved in the administration of the law look bad.

Allegedly Machete makes whites look like evil bad people and Mexicans look like the good great people who will overcome the white people. Or at least that's what Alex Jones of PrisonPlanet.com says here:

Welcome to stereotypes. Blacks have been dealing with that problem since film was created. Oh, come to think of it, according to CMR, there aren't any African Americans in Machete.

Oh well. Now, I'm really upset.

Oh, third, according to the search stats, only people in Arkansas, Alabama, and Texas care about this issue. They represent 20 percent of the search traffic. So, the Machete Race War is really only on the minds of those in Arkansas, Alabama, and Texas anyway.

Translation? Don't worry about it. But see the movie first. I've not seen it. Maybe I will.

From our friend Jeff C @cbs2ny.com

UPDATE: Revis, Jets Agree To New Deal « CBS New York- News, Sports, Weather, Traffic and the Best of NY

Google Blogger Real Time Traffic Stats Better Than Clicky.com, Worldlogger

Blogger.com, owned by Google, has added something this blogger has wanted to see for a long time: a "real time" traffic statistics system. It's a real improvement for Blogger.com, and can go a long way toward revolutionizing blogging. The question you may be asking is "what's real time traffic estimation."

Real time traffic estimation, or "real time web analytics," is where a software program updates estimates of such common web traffic measures as unique visitors and pageviews. A good system can do this within four to six minutes of the installation of a blog post.

This blogger discovered how useful real time blogging was almost by accident. Yobie Benjamin, who's a fellow CityBrights blogger at SFGate.com, turned me on to something he helped develop called in an effort to track down an Internet stalker. Yobie shut down his system, but I happened to find another one that had a license to use his software. It's called Clicky.com. But a month after installing the code, Click.com became a tool for another effort: real time blogging.

Real Time Blogging, or "Trend Blogging" is developing a blog post in response to what the top searches are on a service like Bing X-Rank or Google Trends. Using real time traffic reporting allows you to see how your blog traffic responds to your posts ability to "hit" the keywords people are using to find out about a subject in a search.

I started doing this last November of 2009 and just after the discovery that I generated 1.1 million unique visitors at SFGate.com for the month of October 2009. By November, that increased to 1.5 million, and in December, 2.2 million unique visitors.  From October to May of 2010, I've generated over 7.7 million visitors at SFGate.com.

Jesse James and Michelle "Bombshell" McGee
The use of Clicky.com continued until the day it was announced that Jesse James was cheating on Sandra Bullock and with Michelle "Bombshell" McGee. That was Wednesday, March 18th, 2010.

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James ruled Google Trends; I wanted to join them.

On that day I wrote six blog posts on the news, and amassed over 280,000 unique visitors before 4 PM EDT, according to SFGate.com staff. I blogged between 7 AM and 11 AM EDT, and by my later estimation, generated over $500 in ad revenue for SFGate.com for that one day, none of it I saw but I helped save some jobs (more about that later in this post).

But the flip side of that, is my videos, even though the latest one wasn't about Bullock at the time, realized a dramatic view increase. All of this was a fantastic development for Real Time Blogging. There was just one problem: Clicky.com.

Clicky.com MAJOR FAIL

Clicky.com stopped tracking traffic data at 4:13 PM EDT, and at 102,000 visitors. In fact, the traffic report updates were slower and slower, until by that time they were a full three hours behind real time. Without an accurate real time traffic gauge, I had stopped blogging around 11 EDT, as stated, really to let the system catch up. But the graph reporting dashboard was literally stuck in place.

This email I received from Clicky.com support explains what happened:

Your site is normally fine but the spikes that you have are HUGE. Not just today but every couple weeks you have a gigantic spike. This one does look to be your biggest yet. You currently have 4400 users on your site at once. We're just absolutely not designed for that level of traffic occurring on a single site. The server is processing the backlog but it's falling further and further behind real time because this is just too much. Your site is currently accounting for almost 50% of the total traffic being logged to your site's database server. Each server is allocated around 8000 sites.

That means your site is logging as much traffic as the other 7,999 sites on the same server put together, and your spike is affecting the other 7,999 sites on this server.

So I'm sorry to say, I don't think we'll be able to track your site anymore. I had to disable it for now so that the server can catch back up.

We can handle sites up to 500,000 daily page views, but that's assuming that traffic is spread out somewhat evenly throughout the day. Your traffic comes in huge spikes in just an hour or two, which doesn't work very well with our service.

I'd recommend checking out chartbeat.com. They don't have nearly as many features as we do but they handle higher traffic and they are real time.

For me that was a major blow. The information on my impact on Clicky.com was new and surprising. What I didn't get was why they didn't try and work with me, upgrading me to another service level?

So, Real Time Blogging hit a misstep. Fortunately, it was a temporary one.

Enter Worldlogger.com

I happened on Worldlogger.com after just searching around and evaluating different services. For all of it's poor customer service, Clicky.com's dashboard was terrific. So that became my model for the next service to use. I did investigate Chartbeat.com but I did not like their dashboard layout. I don't want dials and numbers; I want graphs and numerical charts and keyword readouts. Worldlogger.com had none of that. At first.

What Worldlogger.com did have and has is a team of people who really want to help you. They are the direct opposite of Clicky.com from a customer service perspective. But the design wasn't what I wanted; Worldlogger took my input and those of others to make a terrific interface. It was lacking in one area at the time: keyword reporting.

Which words are causing what level of traffic at what time is a critical part of Real Time Blogging. Worldlogger lacked that. Even with that, Worldlogger's people were so incredible to work with, I stuck with the service as they were constantly improving it.

Focus Turns To Zennie62.com

About two months later I refocused on what had been a year-long process: getting Zennie62.com on Google News.  The argument I made to Google execs was that aside from meeting their basic requirements, all of my blog posts on SFGate.com started at Zennie62.com.   That realization sealed the deal.

Then, Blogger announced Real Time Traffic Stats and the new course for Zennie62.com was set.

My objective with Zennie62.com and my new Georgia-based company Zennie62Media.com is to show that a worthy competitor to blog sites like The Huffington Post and PerezHilton.com can be created using the Blogspot.com platform.  There a lot of incorrect assumptions about Blogspot.com that Zennie62.com's growth can help eliminate.  Plus, I want to be able to capture that $500 per day of revenue (when it happens) for my media site.

SFGate.com and The SeattlePI.com are great websites, but the fact is what I'm doing is light years ahead of what's being done on those sites and elsewhere.

Consider entering a blog post with a photo from a cell phone at a Cal Football game, then having that blog post hit Google News, Twitter, and Facebook minutes later, all while being at the game and not in the press box.  That happened Saturday and here's the post. Real Time Blogging goes mobile.

The Future Is Not For Everyone

Real Time Blogging is not for everyone. Journalists will hate it, and some who are aware of what I do already dislike it. But the bottom line is the revenue returns are better than anything news websites are doing now.

The future of media is Real Time Blogging. It can also save investigative journalism by generating revenue and eyeballs for it.

Chilean Miners Rescue Op Called "Operation San Lorenzo"

Chilean Miners on video (CNN)
33 Chilean Miners, who have been trapped for 25 days and 2,258 feet below the ground in Copiapo, Chile, will be rescued as part of a plan called "Operation San Lorenzo."

The miners, who reportedly almost escaped being trapped in the mine itself as it collapsed, were discovered alive, and surviving via stretching a 48-hour food ration over a 20-day period.

Now, the miners are receiving food, supplies and communications equipment via three holes bored down to the area they're trapped in. Their first request? To Send toothbrushes.

The miners aren't all in one space; they sleep in various parts of the mine. A tunnel some distance away reportedly serves as their toilet.

Operation San Lorenzo Ambitious and Risky

"Operation San Lorenzo" involves using giant drills, one called The Strata 950 and the other the T-130 to bore through the rock. It's estimated that it will take four months to create a full hole. Engineers are reportedly examining how the hole can be expanded in such a way as to get the men out of there.

Stay tuned.

Beck admits he lied to the rally August 28th: it was easier than telling the truth.

As Steve Krakauer of Mediaite explains, Keith Olberman caught Glenn Beck's "white lie" told to the crowd at the August 28th rally:
...he didn’t actually hold George Washington’s first inaugural address. He just had it held in front of him.
Beck's discussion on his show, admitting the lie, seeks to make light of it because the full explanation is "clumsy" in a speech. So, he says, "They caught me."  He recounted a trip to the Archives, but...
"...you can’t touch them..."
Glenn Beck
Keith Olbermann caught him telling a lie. He wants people to laugh it off; Beck says it's no big deal in his quasi-retraction, the equivalent of artistic license.

At a certain level, Beck's doubters are unsurprised by the irony that he'd stoop to fabrication to maintain his credibility with his audience. The problem remains that Beck followers are unlikely to even hear the correction, let alone to believe it if and when they do. We'd all like to think that presented with a truth, logic will dictate what most people believe - but Beck's realized that oldest truth: that a lie can run around the world while the truth is still getting its shoes on.

"Tell the truth," Glenn Beck exhorted the crowd on the National Mall, "and then expect it from others." But not, for heaven's sake, from a Fox Network entertainer in pursuit of ratings. But he probably did at least go to see the Archives building, I suppose. He wouldn't lie about that, would he?

Cal 52, UC Davis 3: Keenan Allen For The Heisman

Keenan Allen in High School
When Cal Football Assistant Coach Tosh Lupoi convinced North Carolina and America's best high school defensive back Keenan Allen to commit to UC Berkeley rather than Alabama, no one had any idea that Allen would wind up on the other side of the ball at Cal, except perhaps Head Coach Jeff Tedford.

Now, Keenan Allen may be the best college freshman wide receiver in the nation.

With his 158 of the 517 yards of total offense Cal amassed against UC Davis in a 52 to 3 win Saturday in Berkeley, Keenan Allen should be marketed as a candidate for The Heisman Trophy. So, let's get the ball rolling (excuse the pun) now. It would make the second straight year Cal had a real, live Heisman candidate, with Cal starting the 2009 Season by touting Running Back Jahvid Best for the award.

If you missed Keenan Allen's amazing 48-yard touchdown, here it is:

And unless you think wide receivers can't win the Heisman, here's two names: Desmond Howard and Tim Brown.

OK, so it's just one game. But this blogger's counting on Cal Offensive Coordinator Andy Ludwig to design the right plays to make it happen.

It's on you, Andy; please, don't wide-receiver-screen him to death, deal?  (More on this, later.)

Cal's Keenan Allen For The Heisman.   You saw it here, first.

Cal Football vs. UC Davis: Cal 42, UC Davis 3 , 3rd

Either because of the weather or because of UC Davis there is a packed house for Cal vs. UC Davis.   Cal is ahead 42 to 3 with a lot more game to go.

Really, Cal should be happy UC Davis is playing a pro offense.  The Aggies are really well suited for a spread option system and could show better against Cal.

The main problem for UC Davis is Cal's Team Speed.  Yep. In caps.

Lovely day in Berkeley
