Donovan McNabb traded: did Eagles get Michael Vick as racial cover-up?

The Philadelphia Eagles trading Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins is still a head-scratcher as he's in the same division.

But now that Donovan McNabb is gone so soon after the Eagles worked to get Quarterback Michael Vick on the field after Vick's release from prison after his illegal dog fighting work, this blogger has to ask the question:

Was the Philadelphia Eagles effort to get Michael Vick a plan to have a black quarterback on staff then trade Donovan McNabb, who's black, just so no one can say "The Eagles trade of Donovan McNabb was racist; they just didn't want a black star in Philadelphia?" If that was the case, here's betting Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who's also black, would stop going to the games, and Philadelphia would be a racially divided town.

As wild as the idea seems, the more I wrap my mind around how the Eagles think and the "cover-up" needed to cleanly pull off a dumb trade like sending Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, the more it is logical that this was their thinking.

The Eagles trading McNabb has been in the public conversation for about a year, but no one thought they would actually do it. And just two months ago, Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid said McNabb was their quarterback.

But when Vick came in last year, the questions started about McNabb's future, and added to the trade talks. But again, no one believed the Eagles would get rid of a winner like McNabb and the face of the franchise.

But they did, and no one claimed it was due to race because the Eagles could then point to Michael Vick.

I'm willing to bet I'm right.

Stay tuned.

The fact that an animal killing felon is welcomed back into the league after incarcaration is a travesty. In his federal indictment it was said that Vicky chained hung drowned and electrocuted his dogs that didn't perform up to his standards. WHO does that to a
dog. The fact that the eagles wanted this freaking monster on their roster is the real question. WTF

Great investigative work! I agree with you! The Eagles are RACIST! They hate black people, those racist mf'ers. How dare they blatantly expose the underbelly of racism by getting rid of their black players and replacing them with whites, and then using other black players to lazily cover up their racism. We need to BOYCOTT those WHITE KKK LOVING RACIST MONSTERS RIGHT NOW

    Ahh, Philly.

Home of violent flash mobs where packs of blacks beat the daylights out of everyone in sight.

Home of the New Black Panthers who intimidated voters during the last presidential election, only to have the black US Attorney General refuse to prosecute the case.

No, Philly doesn't want to appear racist.

  4. Donovan MacNab is a good quarterback, but he was never what you would call a consistently great quarterback. During his better days he might have come close, but sorry, not quite there.

Anybody that thinks MacNab was traded due to his race has to be a nut. Now, I will admit, it is slightly possible that the Eagles acquired Vick as insurance against accusations of racism. But that's only because they are all too well aware that there are a full supply of demagogues and opportunists ready and willing to play the race card at the drop of a hat.

MacNab is starting to get up in years, and being traded just goes with the territory of being an aging sports athlete. The fact that he is a good, sometimes great, quarterback, at his age, means the Eagles can trade him for some new, promising prospects that will hopefully from their perspective pay them dividends over the coming years. MacNab's star will soon decline. If they wait too long, they can't get half as much for him as they can now.

That might sound cold and calculating, and maybe it is, but one thing it is not, is racism.

It's just the reality of the sports world.

  5. I am not an avid commenter but i must say a few things:

    1. Your post makes you appear racist.

    2. McNabb could have been traded the day before the NFC Championship to the Eagles opponent (hypothetically speaking of course) and it still would be a good trade because he consistently loses big games.

    3. Vick has nothing to do with it.

    4. Controversy is the life-force of bloggers.

  6. This stupid trick of calling someone racist, who POINTS OUT RACISM, must end. Racism is putting a person down because of their skin color, not point to racism. Knock it off.
