Mental health of Californians- Find out what factors put you at risk. By Dr. Christina Villarreal
Researchers from UCLA have determined that 4.9 million people in California believe they need help for a mental or emotional health problem. So why are so many of us suffering without getting the treatment we need? Part of the problem may be stigma. It’s hard for many Californians to acknowledge they need help — to their family, friends or their doctor. The goal and challenge for policymakers and mental health care providers is to both target appropriate services to those in need, and to reduce people's fear of seeking help.
“There’s a lot of need, but also a lot of obstacles connecting those in need to the services that can help them,” stated David Grant, Ph.D., lead author and director of the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS).“The recession has created even more stress for people,” he acknowledged. As a result, this study “is probably an underestimate of the true level of mental health need in California right now.
Researchers from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research also determined that approximately one in 25, or more than 1 million, reported symptoms associated with serious psychological distress (SPD), which includes the most serious kinds of diagnosable mental health disorders. Of those adults with either “perceived need” or SPD, only one in three reported visiting a mental health professional for treatment, a factor potentially attributable to fear of stigmatization, as well as lack of insurance coverage, the researchers said. The study draws on data from the 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), which is administered by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.
What factors put you, or others you know at risk?
Women at risk
Women were nearly twice as likely as men (22.7 percent vs. 14.3 percent) to say they needed help for a mental or emotional health problem (“perceived need”), such as feeling sad, anxious or nervous.
Working-age adults at risk
The prevalence of perceived need was twice as high for adults under 65 as for those 65 and older (20.2 percent vs. 9.2 percent).
Income a significant factor
The poorest adults — those living below 100 percent of the federal poverty level — were much more likely to report symptoms associated with SPD than those with incomes that were even just slightly higher. The poorest were more than five times as likely to report SPD as those living at or above 300 percent of the federal poverty level.
Distress pervasive regardless of race or ethnicity
Although racial and ethnic disparities in mental health were found in the study, those differences diminished when adjusted for income. These findings suggest that mental health status is more closely related to socioeconomic status than ethnicity or place of birth.
Insurance coverage improves access to services
Adults with health insurance coverage were almost twice as likely to have received mental health services during the previous 12 months as adults without health insurance.
Stigma, cultural factors may impede access to services
Men, adults aged 65 or older, and Latino and Asian immigrant groups were far less likely to seek help with a mental health professional than other groups. The authors note that these findings suggest that stigma and cultural factors may pose a significant barrier to care.
So how do Californians compare to the rest of the country with regards to our mental health? California ranks at # 15th on overall occurrence of depression compared to other American states, according to the study "Ranking the States: An Analysis of Depression Across the States", which was researched and written by Mental Health America and Thomson Healthcare. It looks at data from 2002-2006 and was conducted from July to November 2007. The report compares depression levels and suicide rates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and uses the information to highlight solutions to improve states' mental health status.

San Francisco Events: Help Is On The Way 16 benefit show is today
The annual San Francisco entertainment must-see event of events is today at 7 PM at the San Francisco Herbst Theater at 401 Van Ness Avenue called Help Is On The Way 16 (get there at 6 PM). It is a presentation of REAF, the Richmond Ermet Aids Foundation of San Francisco (REAF.org), which has produced the show for 16 years and all to raise money for AIDS research.
Readers of this space know I've been a proponent of REAF's work and of this very cool annual event. Here'a video about this evening's show:
As stated before, Leanne Borghesi, Carol Channing, Davis Gaines, La Toya London, Carole Cook, James Darren, Paula West, Bruce Vilanch, Kimberley Locke, and Melissa Manchester headline the performers at this great San Francisco event as of this writing.
Got no plans? Or if you've got them, change them. Check out the show; you will not be disappointed.

Mike Bloomberg NYU "Inside Lobby Work" dirty deals by Suzannah B. Troy
Read the article which exposes two part times commissioner for mayor Bloomberg for being full time and lobbyists. Joseph Goldstien writes:
and
"Perlmutter and two of her colleagues at the Bryan Cave lobby firm have been paid more than $42,000 by NYU to lobby the Landmarks Commission and seven other agencies for approval to build in the heart of Greenwich Village. Among its plans is a 385-foot skyscraper."
The conflict of interest committees is the biggest joke in town and by the way king Mike appoints the people who refuse to do their job.
I have had words with Mike Bloomberg twice in my life and both at city hall. The 2nd time was caught on YouTube, "Mayor Mike Bloomberg gives Suzannah B. Troy the thumbs up as she yells "Oust the king!" City Hall". The first time I did not know how corrupt he was and so committed to NYU's expansion at the expense of the community along with Amanda the peoples Burden, his socialite mega-millionaire city planner. I asked mayor Bloomberg to come visit the E. Village, Lower East Side and Bowery and he said he did and last time he mentioned how much he supports NYU and he said the people nearly lynched him. NYU rents a pink building on the Bowery next to the homeless shelter and has signs asking them to not loiter in front of their dorm. Visit 120 East 12th Street and see the facade of St. Ann's from 1847 like an albatross reminding views NYU has ruthlessly torn down our historic buildings as NYU mega dormed the East Village to death. Thank you to The New York Post for exposing so much corruption but when is there going to be a trial? See my 2 new YouTubes Mike Boomberg trial? and Christine Quinn for mayor Mike's mini me. If you want Mike Bloomberg for a 4th term vote for Christine Quinn. She takes huge kick backs aka campaign donations from developers.
Christine Quinn is no Jane Jacobs who fought for the people. Christine Quinn has sold her soul and the people of New York to developers like Mike Bloomberg but he did more buying than selling.
Note: New Yorkers are calling me and stopping me in the street asking me what is happening with the NY City Council Slush found scandals? I bring all this up because reading this article in The New York Post and also being asked questions about slushy city council members as well as city council members stealing tax payer money the question is are any high ranking city officials going to jail any time soon?
Here I am calling State Attorney's Office Southern District and telling my YouTube audience about it.
Thanks to True New from Change for sending me this article from The New York Post.
Tila Tequila attack at Gathering of Juggalos was planned
Tila Tequila said that she was attacked at a concert called the Gathering of Juggalos late Friday night and into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
While Tila Tequila has engaged in what turned out to be false claims that she was the victim of domestic abuse or harm from another one of her so-called multiple personalities, this time she's telling the truth.
Moreover, the attack that Tila Tequila suffered at the Gathering of Juggalos concert - an annual festival of indy music and alternative or "underground" life that's best described as a rough version of Burning Man - was planned.
According to tweets by Nathan Rabin from AVClub.com and a blog called Juggalo Holocaust, there were informal yet openly communicated plans to harm or harass Tila Tequila in some way.
Tila Tequila was to perform at Gathering of Juggalos
In some comments and blogs, people asked why Tila Tequila was even at the 11th annual Gathering of Juggalos concert in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois? The event, called "The official Psychopathic Records and ICP annual fan gathering event," had Tila Tequila as one of its name concert acts according to the website poster and "Sugar Slam" who mentioned this in the promotional video for the event.
On Nathan Rabin's Twitter account @nathanrabin, he issued the following tweet that apparently was before Tila Tequila went on stage as part of what was called "Ladies Night:"
Contemplating ditching Green for Tila Tequila. Word is she'll be met with critical brickbats. And actual bricks perhap.
about 16 hours ago via txt
In other words, there was at least a chance that someone planned to harm her using a brick.
Nathan Rabin continued on Twitter with a series of tweets that give a good idea of what happened:
Tila Tequila took off her top in a desperate bid to win back the crowd. It did not work.
about 16 hours ago via txt
After a half naked, clearly lip-synching Tequila was so inundated with projectiles that she ran offstage they shut ladies night down.
about 16 hours ago via web from Harrisburg, IL
Then again, I left at 5 AM like a pussy so I don't entirely know whether Li'l Kim managed to perform before a sea of enraged Juggalos or not
about 16 hours ago via web from Harrisburg, IL
"A sea of enraged Juggalos," indicates something really went wrong. And according to the blog
Juggalo Holocaust Tila was warned that there were plans to harm her in some way via commentary from her own blog. Here's some of what was posted at the blog:
Rage "I'm waiting around for a blogger to post about the juggalos throwing pee-filled balloons at this bitch."
ITS ICP NOT IKP "you better watch your head..YOU WILL BE BOOED OFF STAGE JUST DO EVERYONE A FAVOR AND STAY HOME!"
jdubb "im throwing rotten hot dogs at you that are gonna be sitting in a warm cooler filled with hot water out in the sun untill that friday… they have also been in my fridge for over a year... i fucking hate you and i will teach you not to come back to the gathering."
And unless you have doubts that some of the people who go to the Gathering of Juggalos throw stuff, take a look at what happened to wrestler Tracey Smothers, who had a Confederate Flag jacket on and was stupid enough to wave a Confederate Flag after a wresting match:
It's one thing to say Tila Tequila should not have gone, but apparently she was a named act that was to be paid for her work. Some claim that Tila is making up the blood stains in the photo, but from the online accounts of what happened and the harm some threatened to do to Tila Tequila if she came to the Gathering of Juggalos, that's not the case.
Tila Tequila was attacked at the Gathering of Juggalos.

Tila Tequila claims brutal attack at Juggalos concert; video?
Tila Tequila Hurt |
I went onstage and immediately, before I even got on stage, DUDES were throwing HUGE STONE ROCKS in my face, beer bottles that slit my eye open, almost burnt my hair on fire cuz they threw fire crackers on stage, and they even took the sh-t out of the port-0-potty and threw sh-t and piss at me when I was onstage."
These people were trying to kill me. So then after the last blow to my head with the firecracker they threw at me exploded, my bodygaurd and the other security grabbed me and ran as fast as they could to the shitty trailor. Since their security SUCKS, the 2 thousand people ran after us, trying to kill me. They almost got me so they finally reach the trailor, blood all over myself, cant stop bleeding, then all of a sudden, all 2 thousand people surround the trailor and busts the windows!!! Even the guys INSIDE with me were shaking! Their hands were shaking cuz they were so scared! So 3 guys inside the trailor had to grab a table and push it over the broken windows and grabbed all the chairs they could find so hold the people from outside back. It was scary as hell!"
While no one wants to see this happen to Tila Tequila or anyone, this video blogger has to ask where's the video? It's hard to believe something so awful as that happened and no one had a video.
But there's more to this story.
Stay tuned for an update!

Good Burger - What's Fantasia Barrino and Steven Slater's best place for a burger?
As of this writing the keyword "Good burger" is at the top of search trends on Google, whereas on Bing x-Rank it's Fantasia Barrino. So in the interest of some Internet fun, this blogger wondered what American Idol and Grammy star Fantasia Barrino and Jet Blue Flight Attendant Steven Slater's best place to get a burger was.
Certainly the conversation of where to get a good burger's more desirable for Fantasia Barrino than talking about the overdose and sex scandal issue she's dealt with this week. And talk of a good burger would bring a smile to the face of Steven Slater, who can tell us what kind of beer he would drink with it.
One thing's for sure, Fantasia Barrino could use a good burger, especially considering what Paula Cook's lawyer said to People Magazine.
Paula Cook's lawyer, who was married to Antwaun Cook, the man who allegedly took up a sexual relationship with Fantasia, said to People Mag that Cook was "saddened and disheartened by the end of her marriage," and that "She's embarrassed, and humiliated and distressed by the lack of respect that was shown for her marriage by Ms. Barrino."
On Friday, photos surfaced of Fantasia Barrino with Antwaun Cook at a local Charlotte, N.C. park. It's open meetings like that, supposedly for Fantasia's VH1 reality TV show, that Cook calls "brazen" and has caused her pain and distress.
Moreover, Paula Cook may sue Fantasia Barrino under something called the "home wrecker law" in North Carolina. (Can you imagine if such a law was on the books in California?)
But what's Fantasia Barrino's favorite place to get a burger? As of this writing, considering all she's going through, Barrino may not be so discriminating as to the kind of burger she eats.
Then, we have Steven Slater, who grabbed two beer cans before he caused to be inflated, then jumped down an emergency escape chute from the JetBlue Boeing 757 he was a flight attendant on. The beer of choice, according to TMZ.com, is Blue Moon Beer.
Now, I've never heard of Blue Moon Beer, so you know they've got to be jumping for joy from all of the attention.
What kind of burger goes with Blue Moon Beer? Well, it's got to be the Blue Moon Burger, which you can only get at Blue Moon Burgers, at 920 Republican Street in Seattle. Now, Blue Moon Burgers better carry Blue Moon Beer, and both should invite Steve Slater in for a meal and a drink.
JetBlue trying to throw mud at Steve Slater?
On the matter of Steve Slater, it seems JetBlue's got its PR machine to go to work on discrediting him, with news of passengers who said he was "rude" before he went AWOL. But it's not working, in the Zennie62 poll of now 1,451 respondents, 63 percent think he's a hero.
What do you think?

Oakland City Council Race: Pat Kernighan's buying drinks Wednesday!
Apparently the news that her Oakland City Council District Two Seat Competitor Jennifer Pae raised over $30,000 has driven her to the bar (just kidding). Oakland City Councilperson Pat Kernighan's hosting a gathering at Era Art Bar on Grand Avenue, just 40 feet from Broadway in Downtown Oakland, where she's buying cocktails for her friends and supporters - uh, with a donation.
If you follow this space, you recall the last political event this blogger attended at Era Art Bar: the Blogger Party for Libby Schaaf, who's running for the Oakland City Council District Four seat. In fact, here's the video:
But - not that I'm complaining - you had to buy your drinks, which is great for controlling cocktail consumption! (And The Era Art Bar's becoming the venue of choice for Oakland political events of late, with Libby, Pat and Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan holding shindigs there.)
This news of "Complimentary Drinks" emphasized in the email reminds this blogger of the great political election events of the 1990s where you never had to pay for a drink. Of course, the events were held by the San Francisco Democratic Party at The Fairmount Hotel.
But I digress.
The event is held this Wednesday, August 18th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, a donation of between $100 if you're a friend and $700 if you're an "angel" is required, and you MUST RSVP by emailing patforcouncil@gmail.com and you can visit her website at www.patforcouncil.com
And as I'm 2,000 miles away, I will not be able to attend.

Tech News - TechCrunch Disrupt coming to San Francisco
Michael Arrington and Carol Bartz |
That event drew 1,000 people from the Bay Area alone, and about 1,200 people overall. Now, TechCrunch Disrupt comes to San Francisco September 27-29 at the San Francisco Design Center Concourse.
What to expect? Well, a great startup competition, as well as the always interesting interviews given by TechCrunch Co-Founder Michael Arrington. Here's a hilarious wrap-up video we did at TechCrunch Disrupt New York City:
On the serious side, the winner of the Startup Battlefield was a firm called Soluto, which offers an online, social networked-based system for help with computers and PCs. In fact, it's so popular now, the firm had to disable some of its website services until its planned new version is launched.
Speakers? Carol Bartz?
As of this writing I don't know who will speak at TechCrunch Disrupt SF. For all I know, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz may return. Here's the famous interview between Arrington and Bartz at TechCrunch Disrupt New York City:
Stay tuned.
The Expendables kicks Scott Pilgrim's tail at box office
Stallone kicks Scott Pilgrim's ass at box office |
Even with it's still current (as of this writing) number-one Twitter Top Trend ranking over The Expendables, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is tanking at the box office. The only movie to lack a single black character's not pulling in the theater money to cover its $60 million to $70 million budget.
Scott Pilgrim's getting it's tail kicked by The Expendables at the movie box office.
According to Dealine.com's Nikke Finke, The Expendables, starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, earned $13.5 million for an estimated weekend gross of $34 million from 3,270 theaters.
By contrast, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World made just $4.7 million from 2,818 theaters. So even thought it opened in fewer movie houses, it was just over 200 fewer. The bottom line is people weren't going to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World other than a small, loyal fan base.
Sylvester Stallone a cultural icon...still
Sylvester Stallone's career success is based on what he described as "epistemological taxonomy," or basically that his movies have become cultural artifacts of sorts, in my video from the red carpet at Comic Con 2010:
Whatever the case, Stallone still means something to the American public, and his appeal is across age, race, and sex. Even Julia Roberts Eat, Pray Love, couldn't beat Stallone and The Expendables at the box office. The romantic escape chick flick (which this blogger plans to see) took in $9 million. The guys beat the girls.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Social Media
The failure of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World at the box office is because the demographic it was aimed at, teens and 20-somethings, don't have the bucks of the past to spend at movies. Social media buzz can't make parents cough up money they don't have in at a time of 9 percent and 10 percent unemployment rates.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is tanking at the box office as of this writing. Nikke Finke predicts complete failure. We shall see.
The Expendables vs. Scott Pilgrim on Twitter - Update
Stallone's pop culture battle is one to watch |
The reason for this, as stated in the last blog, is that The Expendables marketing outreach, which innovatively took it directly into the pop culture Mecca called Comic Con 2010 San Diego, was to create buzz from a demographic not known for supporting heavy, non-video-game-based action movies.
Then, Lionsgate worked to boost The Expendables Twitter exposure by using staff and actors as part of a Herculean effort that almost worked to catch up to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on Twitter.
Still, it's early in the game. But Scott Pilgrim sits atop Teitter.
Obama supports Mosque by WTC site by Suzannah B. Troy
President Obama made waves yesterday by supporting the plans to build a Mosque by the WTC site.
President Obama said:
"Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," the President said to applause from the 90 guests at a White House dinner Room celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.
If only it was that simple. Yes, we are all agreed we believe in religious freedom.
I wrote this previously in response to a New York Post editorial on their piece about Mayor Bloomberg telling New Yorker to shut up on the Mosque debate.
No Mike Bloomberg people are not going to shut up because the wounds are still open and very raw. Yes we believe in religious freedom but please explain how the WTC is still an open wound. Many can remember the smoke that would melt rescue workers' shoes. If the smallest piece of DNA was found people finally had the most minute something of a loved one.
How excruciating is that Mike to have to hope for the most infinitesimal DNA to find a love one and they are still finding remains so no Mike, people won't shut up. I do not know why a Muslim group would be so insensitive and if they wanted to help heal and bring people together why not ask for suggestions and feedback. It doesn't sound like rocket science to reach out to a community post 9-11 but it seems this group wants to cause more pain. Do they have right to build yes but does it seem like they want to cause more pain? Yes.
Getting back to President Obama and I know he has a sense of humor so I would loved to have asked him for his thoughts about the gay bar that will be coming to the building next door to the proposed site of the Mosque. Here is The New York Post article "Erecting a gay bar next door". Will the members of the Mosque welcome their gay neighbors?
