Zennie Loves Sotto Mare In North Beach, San Francisco
Sotto Mare is San Francisco's North Beach District, is this bloggers new most favorite San Francisco eatery. Look, don't expect some restaurant review here, this is my take.
Eating at Sotto Mare was the idea of my best friend Beth Schnitzer and her brother Steven, and friends Ragu and Shuri. At first, I didn't know what to make of this narrow space called "Gigi Fiorucci's Oysteria and Seafood Restaurant located at 552 Green Street" until we sat down.
The waitress, who was wearing a "Roxy" hat, had a personality that makes the room seem bigger than it is, and you know, that quality is not limited to her, it's part of the Sotto Mare culture. The staff really seems like it's family having a great time. Just a bunch of good, down to earth people, who make great food.
What was that food? The Sotto Mare Cioppino. Wow. If you don't like it, there's something massively wrong with you. I'm just saying. The cioppino and the sand dabs, which we had and are in the video, are to die for.
I could go on and on about this place. The people who work there are so friendly, their energy rubs off on the customers. So everyone' nice to each other, even in that little space. A slice of heaven.
Oakland Mayor's Race: Marcy Hodge Interview
Peralta Community College District Board Member Marcy Hodge has labored as one of the lesser known candidates, who's activity in the Oakland Mayor's Race was punctuated by having her sister Nicole Hodge file a defamation lawsuit against The East Bay Express. In the video interview, Hodge talks about why she decided to run for Mayor and her approach.
Hodge says she decided to run for mayor because she didn't think any of the candidates were talking about the issues Oaklanders were dealing with. "I didn't really feel really excited about the candidates."
She's ran a campaign that features billboards and lawn signs all over Oakland. What's interesting is as this day approached, more and more "Marcie Hodge" lawn signs have appeared around Oakland. A signal that some Oaklanders had not decided on a candidate and were swayed toward Hodge.
The East Bay Express and Hodge
Robert Gammon has, for some reason, consistently and dangerously attacked Hodge for running for Mayor of Oakland. Gammon has written that, for all practical purposes, Hodge is a "tool" of Oakland Mayor's Race competitor Don Perata, and asserted that overall her campaign is "illegal." What's interesting is that Gammon didn't make a matrix of what the other Oakland Mayor's Race candidates have done in filling reports, he just focused on Marcie.
While the charge was not supported by any Oakland legal official, just Gammon, and he caused the lawsuit with a series of sloppy blog posts, to his credit, Gammon came back with a very good and through follow-up last week.
The video was created before Gammon's latest work. In that one, Robert's done his homework and raises a good point Marcie should address. Marcie told this blogger she was going to file her financial reports last week. But with that, it doesn't explain why Gammon focused on Hodge in the way he did.
Improving Oakland
Hodge says the best way to reduce the Oakland budget deficit is to attract more businesses to Oakland and grow the tax base; she does not favor bankruptcy as an option. "We have to find creative ways of reducing the deficit...We need to look the way China does it (budgets). They plan (the budget) for 100 years."
On Oakland Sports
Hodge, like many of the candidates, does not favor using "public money" to retain the Oakland A's. While she wants to retain them, she does not offer an alternative solution but wants to see "creative ways" to keep them. Hodge doesn't favor suing the Oakland A's or the City of San Jose, favoring the approach of fostering a "cordial relationship" with both parties.
City And Mayor's Office Under Hodge
On the subject of City of Oakland morale, Hodge says that when there's no vision from the city's elected officials, there's no reason for workers to get behind the city and that impacts morale. She's not willing to point at Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums by name, but does so by comments in our conversation.
On the matter of the Oakland Police, Hodge doesn't favor reducing police salaries and feels that they "take a beating" in the public eye.
The Hodge Candidacy
Marcie Hodge is a good person who's campaign, while marked by a single-person media attack, has been largely successful. Why? She's visible and attractive, which may be the reason she's getting attention from undecided Oaklanders. Will all of that be enough to gain a substantial number of votes is the question of the day.
Can Tommy Wiseau Have Your Number?
With all the stress surrounding Election Day it might be nice to watch a video that is a spoof off of the MADTv skit "Can I Have Your Number?" This one features Tommy Wiseau instead - and it is sure to bring some laughs. So, take a break from worrying about election day and watch a nice video.
Demi Lovato In Rehab
The innocent and adorable Disney star Demi Lovato has checked into rehab according to People magazine online.
People reports that the 18-year-old decided to seek medical help after getting in a fight with a dancer while on tour and Lovato has also been struggling with her body image.
The article title on the menu bar says "Demi Lovato in Rehab for Cutting," but the title on the page says "A Fight Sent Demi Lovato to Rehab." The article itself makes it seem as though the main reason for going to rehab is her weight issues - hopefully the teen star can get the help she needs, and it's good that she has taken this step now before it escalated.
Oakland Mayor's Race: Video Interviews With All 10 Candidates
If you haven't made up your mind on who to vote for in the Oakland Mayor's Race on election day, today, this series of Zennie62 on YouTube videos should help a little.
They comprise over 300 minutes of conversations and 15 videos that in total make up the most ambitious video blog effort I've ever done. The idea was to give you a view of all of the candidates, not just some of them. (That effort's the biggest example of local print and television media prejudice and attempt to control information I've ever seen. And if someone calls them by a name that brings up Nazi Germany, they'll start whining and crying, but at this stage, given their antics, I don't care what they think.)
So in honor of The San Francisco Giants as World Champions and Tim Lincecum, this blogger says FUCK YEAH! (OK. Lots of San Francisco street party hoping and killer videos in celebration last night, but I digress.)
The videos represents all of the candidates: Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, Joe Tuman, Don Macleay, Don Perata, Councilmember Jean Quan, Larry Lionel Young, Arnie Fields, Marcie Hodge, Terrance Candell, and Greg Harland. Plus, there' are two forum overview videos and one commentary on the Sierra Club forum when it was messed up, trying to segregate candidates from attending. (Thank God that was corrected.)
The video playlist below has all of the candidates video interviews. The order does not indicate who this blogger endorses for Mayor of Oakland:
I will also post summaries of interviews conducted last week, and my recommendations, before 12 noon PDT.
Stay tuned.

Giants Win World Series
The San Francisco Giants have not won the World Series since 1954.
The World Series MVP was shortstop Edgar Renteria who marched the championship trophy around the Giants' clubhouse.
Giants have come a long way since Barry Bonds' left in 2007, and it's great that they have finally had another victory.
Zach Galifianakis Supports Prop 19
Proposition 19 in California if passed will legalize marijuana within the state of California.
On HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, Zach Galifianakis lit up a fake joint in order to show his support.
Nancy Pelosi's Immediate Future
Tomorrow is Tuesday, November 2, 2010, election day in the United States. Tomorrow's election day will prove whether or not the Democrats will stay in control or if there will be a new shift in power.
Current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, is getting a lot of attention, because if the Republicans take the House of Representatives she may follow the path of her immediate predecessors Newt Gingrich and Dennis Hastert and resign.
Yahoo News' Politics posts an article called "It's Looking Like Speaker or Nothing for Pelosi." Kathleen Hunter wrote on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 that Pelosi would have little interest in becoming the Minority Leader if the Republicans win the House.
Unemployment News: Armed Guards in Unemployment offices
Unemployment news gets worse every day in America, but did you ever think that things in America would get so bad that we would need to put armed guards into our unemployment offices?
Recently Indiana announced that it will be putting armed guards in all 36 of that state’s unemployment offices, in what state officials said is a step to improve safety and make branch security more consistent.
No specific incidents prompted the action, according to Department of Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter.
Lotter said the agency is merely being cautious with the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods.
"Given the upcoming expiration of the federal extensions and the increased stress on some of the unemployed, we thought added security would provide an extra level of protection for our employees and clients," said Lotter.
So could things really get out of hand when thousands of unemployed workers in Indiana find out that they aren’t going to get checks any longer? Could we soon see economic riots similar to what we have seen in Greece and France?
Lets face it, the majority of those calling themselves the 99ers have been without unemployment benefits for more than 8 months and no violent out breaks have happened in America, yet - but we shall see what happens if the Congress does not get off it’s collective “butt” when they return mid-November and pass not only a Tier 5 but extend too, the UI filing deadlines.
But it is not just the state of Indiana that could have a problem. In fact, one recent study found that approximately 2 million Americans will lose their unemployment insurance benefits during this upcoming holiday season unless Congress authorizes another emergency extension of benefits by the end of November. At this point, however, that is looking less and less likely.
What if all the states start putting armed security guards in their unemployment offices? The truth is that frustration among unemployed Americans is growing by the day and the idea of armed guards in unemployment offices has been catching on in many other states where the unemployment is unreasonably high. Most Social Services offices have had armed guards stationed in many cities throughout the USA for years now.
So who is paying for all of this extra security? The Feds of course, which means Tax Payers.
The additional cost of the new security (in Indiana) will be approximately $1 million, and it will be paid for with U.S. government funds designated for the administration of the unemployment system according to Lotter.
Whether or not violence breaks out in American streets over the economic woes of the “have nots” may well be determined by what happens tomorrow at ballot boxes throughout America. If you are hurting now - God help us all if the Republicans take back control of the Congress.

World Series 2010: Rangers Nolan Ryan Says "We Can Win Three In A Row"
The Dan Patrick Show had Texas Rangers President Nolan Ryan on this morning, who made some interesting comments, including saying the Rangers could win the next three World Series games against the San Francisco Giants. Here's the recap.
Ryan Keeps DP Show Waiting
On the morning of the day of World Series Game 5, Texas Rangers President and Pitching Legend Nolan Ryan was set to talk with with former ESPN Personality and host of The Dan Patrick Show, on radio and DIRECTV, Dan Patrick. From the looks of it, Ryan's keeping Dan and his staff, called "The Danette's ,"waiting. As of this writing, Ryan's a no show.
Given the Rangers sorry performance against The San Francisco Giants in the 2010 World Series, he would have been forgiven for backing out. The Texas Rangers are just one SF Giants victory from being blown out of the World Series by a combined score of 26 to 9. That Giants win could come this evening.
Todd Fritz, Executive Producer of The Dan Patrick Show and called "Fritzy," just explained that the Texas Rangers spokesperson said they haven't seen Ryan in the office and can't find him, but as of this writing, they're trying to.
Wow. Talk about a blow off by Ryan – at least as of this writing.
UPDATE – Ryan's in transit, driving to the Texas Rangers' office.
Ryan's on now. Says' he's been in better moods: "We're going to have pitch well tonight and have some offense." He says he's more surprised by their hitting. The Giants are "by far playing the best baseball."
On Rangers Pitcher Cliff Lee (who's set to start for the Rangers tonight): "No contract discussions," as of this writing and Ryan will not do so until after the season. "I have to believe (Lee and his family) have enjoyed their time here. That may be an advantage for us."
Stating the obvious, Ryan says The Rangers have struggled in the middle of their lineup during the 2010 World Series. On Rangers Outfielder Josh Hamilton's unexpectedly poor World Series play, Ryan said "I think they've seen him in both playoff situations and have a pretty good idea how to pitch him. So they're throwing a lot of off plate pitches."
On the season and The World Series: I think it's a success even with the World Series. You don't like to lose any game." Patrick asked if the Rangers could win the next three World Series games. Ryan: We can win three in a row. We've got our three best pitchers (coming up).
On Tim Lincecum versus Cliff Lee "We want Cliff Lee to be on like he was against the Yankees and Tampa Bay."
On hugging and kissing or hugging and kissing First Lady Laura Bush Ryan said "We were just all excited to get into the win column," after the Rangers win on Saturday.
Madison Bumgarner, Aubrey Huff, Buster Posey: SF Giants World Series 1 Win Away
Thanks to the pitching of Madison Bumgarner, and the bats of Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey, the San Francisco Giants are just one Arlington Stadium win away from its first World Series Championship win in its history. The Giants beat The Rangers 4 to nothing in Arlington, Texas.
In the process of chalking up its third win in the last four games, The San Francisco Giants are defying the experts, who expected the Texas Rangers to display more batting power than the baseball team by the Bay. So, far, with the exception of Saturday's World Series Game 3, it hasn't happened.
As the great SF Giants Fan blog McCovey Chronicles explains, Madison Bumgarner was just "a pitching prospect without a fastball. His velocity wasn’t just down, it was Rueterian." Buster Posey "didn’t have enough of his manager’s trust to play in September" one year ago. And Aubrey Huff was "lucky to get a major league contract after he floundered in Detroit."
Wow, how fast fortunes can change in just a year.
Madison Bumgarner allowed just three Rangers hits in eight innings of play. Aubrey Huff, played the DH role expertly with a two-run home run. Buster Posey's homer was the coup-de-gras, putting the Giants up 4 to 0.
On Monday, the first day of November, and one day before election day, the San Francisco Giants get a chance to make their own statement as World Champions of Baseball and for the first time since 1954.
Stay tuned. The Giants face Texas Rangers ace Cliff Lee on the mound.

March Of Dimes, Walgreens CFO, Honor White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford
The good news in politics is often not reported. Such is the case with this news of The March of Dimes Of Chicago and Walgreens CFO, Wade D. Miquelon, who's formal title is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Walgreens as Honorary Chairperson, presenting White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford with the 2010 Chef of the Year award just over a month ago.
According to The March Of Dimes, Wade D. Miquelon was joined in the role of Honorary Chairperson by Denise Wong, Vice President and Division Chief Information Officer of Walgreens. The retailer was presenting sponsor for the event to honor this Chicago legend who serves President Obama in the role of White House Executive Chef.
First Woman As White House Executive Chef
First Lady Laura Bush selected Cristeta Comerford as Executive Chef on August 14th 2005. She became not just the first woman but the first Filipino and minority in the role. When Bush gave way to the tidal wave that was the Obama movement into the White House, Comerford, a Chicagoan, was retained in her role.
In doing so, First Lady Michelle Obama said this "Cristeta Comerford brings such incredible talent to the White House operation and came very highly regarded from the Bush family," Michelle Obama said in a statement released by the transition team. "Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families."
